This beloved neighborhood is an iconic and renowned area of Sarasota. “West of the Trail” pertains to any properties or homes that sit west of Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Homes in this area vary dramatically in size and architecture, but they are always considered among the most prime real estate in Sarasota.
While “West of the Trail” means any home west of US 41, when described by locals it really means the area running from the North Bridge to Siesta Key north to Downtown Sarasota. Here, flower streets like Bougainvillea Street, Wisteria Lane, and Hibiscus Street finger off of Tamiami Trail. The streets, by name, are overflowing with gorgeous flowering shrubs, canopy roads and friendly neighbors. Homes in this area vary from quaint little craftsman-style homes to larger modern new builds. One thing everyone in Sarasota can agree on, there is no place quite as beautiful as West of the Trail.
Closer to the ocean, is the exclusive Cherokee Park neighborhood, where stunning estates and stylish abodes line three beautifully landscaped parallel roads that lead to the water.
As you head towards Downtown Sarasota, you’ll pass through other neighborhoods that hold the same appeal as Cherokee Park, including Harbor Acres and Avondale. These neighborhoods boast larger lots with easy access to the ocean. The communities themselves are much larger, but feature a variety of estates, all of which are convenient to Downtown Sarasota and Siesta Key.
If you don’t feel like heading downtown or to the key, you are in luck. The Hillview area is a true highlight West of the Trail. This relaxed entertainment district features a gourmet grocery store for all of your needs from fresh veggies to duck liver pate and an assortment of wines. There’s also a mixture of boutiques, salons, restaurants and bars here that serve up the perfect lifestyle.
Families and retirees dwell here, but the real attraction is in the nearby elementary school, Southside Elementary School. A home in this district guarantees you access to one of Sarasota’s most esteemed schools.
